she asked her voice barely audible.
Daniel didnt answer right away. His eyes darkened the mention of him stirring something raw inside him. She knew it was dangerous to even say his name. The third person in their tragic trianglethe man who had brought their youthful love to the brink of ruin and whose disappearance had remained a mystery even to them.
You know I dont like talking about him Daniel finally said his voice strained. But if it is... if hes back somehow we need to be ready for anything.
Emily felt a shiver crawl up her spine. She hadnt thought of him in years. Not really. They had all vowed to forget to leave the past buried deep in the cliffs where the waves could wash it away. But some things refused to stay buried.
Suddenly there was a sharp knock at the door cutting through the tension in the room like a blade. Emily and Daniel exchanged a look both instantly on edge. Who could it be at this hour? And more importantlywho would know she was back in town?
Daniel moved first pulling the door open cautiously. Standing on the porch was a tall figure cloaked in the shadows of the night holding something in his hand.
Youre both in danger the man said his voice steady but cold. You need to leave. Now.
Emilys heart dropped as the man stepped forward his face finally illuminated by the pale glow of the porch light. It was a face she hadnt seen in years. A face she thought shed never see again.
It was him.
The man who should have been dead.
The man they had buried.
Emily stumbled backward her mind struggling to process the impossible sight before her. She clutched the edge of a nearby chair her legs threatening to give way beneath her. It couldnt be him. They had watched him fallwatched the waves swallow him whole that night on the cliffs.
But there he stood alive breathing and very real.
Daniel froze his face pale his hand still gripping the door handle. His gaze darted from Emily to the man on the porch. It took everything in him to suppress the shock but she could see the same disbelief in his eyes.
How...? Daniels voice was hoarse barely more than a whisper.
The manNathangave a grim smile one that sent a chill down Emilys spine. He stepped fully into the light his features sharper than she remembered. There was something colder harder about him now a cruel twist in his smile that hadnt been there before.
You didnt think it would be that easy did you? Nathan said his voice low almost mocking. He tossed the object in his hand onto the floor between thema weathered envelope. I told you you couldnt outrun your past forever.
Emilys heart pounded as her eyes flicked to the envelope. It was identical to the one she had received days earlier. Her mind raced with questions but her body was frozen in fear. Nathan had been dead. She had seen him fall seen his body hit the rocks below. How could this be happening?
Daniel regaining some of his composure stepped forward blocking Emily from Nathans view. You should be dead he said his voice filled with restrained anger. We saw you fall.
Nathans grin widened and he let out a dark humorless laugh. You saw what you wanted to see. I was lucky that night luckier than either of you deserve to know. But I didnt come back to explain how I survived. I came back because you owe me. Both of you.
Emilys breath hitched. She knew exactly what he meant. That nightthe nighthad been a storm of chaos and violence. Nathan had been the one pulling the strings pushing them all to the edge. He had always been dangerous a ticking time bomb waiting to explode and when he finally did their lives had been shattered. She and Daniel had tried to escape him tried to leave that part of their lives behind. But clearly Nathan had other plans.
We dont owe you anything Daniel shot back his voice hardening. Youre the one who
who gave you both an out Nathan interrupted his voice darkening. And now Ive come to collect.
Emily felt the weight of his words crash down on her like a wave. Whatever Nathan wanted it wasnt going to be simple. And it wasnt going to end well. She could see the gleam in his eyes the twisted satisfaction of a man who had spent years in the shadows plotting his return. He wanted something from themsomething they couldnt afford to give.
But before she could speak Nathans gaze locked onto her his eyes narrowing. You thought you were free didnt you Emily? His voice was low menacing. But youre not. Ive been watching you. Both of you. And now its time to settle the score.
Daniel shifted slightly his body tense ready to protect her but Nathan held up a hand. Relax. Im not here to kill youyet. But Im giving you both a choice. Either you help me with what Ive come to do or I make sure the truth about that night comes out. Every. Single. Detail.
Emilys stomach twisted into knots. The truth. No one could know what really happened that night. Not the authorities not the townspeopleno one. If the truth came out it would destroy them. Everything they had tried to rebuild would crumble.
Daniels fists clenched at his sides. What do you want?
Nathans smile returned slow and dangerous. Theres something valuable hidden in this town. Something that could change everythingfor all of us. Youre going to help me find it.
Emilys pulse quickened. This wasnt about revenge. This was something biggersomething they had never expected. Her thoughts swirled as she struggled to comprehend the full scope of what Nathan was demanding. But one thing was clear if they didnt play along their darkest secret would be exposed to the world.
Nathan turned to leave pausing in the doorway to glance back at them one last time. Youve got two days to decide he
